Si un prénom est indissociable de l’Irlande, c’est bien Patrick (ou Patrice). Patrick d’Irlande vivait dans la première moitié du Vème siècle. On lui attribue l’évangélisation de l’île et la création du christianisme irlandais. L’Irlande toute entière mais aussi les 80 à 100 millions de ressortissants établis à travers le monde lui rendent hommage chaque 17 mars.
Le 28ème festival Ecrans britanniques & irlandais ne pouvait pas ne pas consacrer cette année sa soirée du lundi 17 mars à cette culture si diversifiée et tellement enracinée dans les esprits de tout un peuple. La richesse de ses traditions, de sa musique sous toutes ses formes, de ses chants, de sa littérature ou de son cinéma est aujourd’hui partagée et appréciée dans le monde entier.
Nous vous convions donc à une soirée 100% Irish pour écouter ‘’en live’’ des musiciens d’ici interprétant des morceaux de là-bas. Vous pourrez assister à la projection d’un remarquable documentaire produit par la BBC 4 et diffusée sur Arte en 2023. Steps of Freedom – The Story of Irish Dance (Les pas de la liberté : histoire de la danse irlandaise) a remporté plusieurs prix. Il nous raconte l’histoire de la gigue à travers les âges. Vous pourrez enfin rencontrer et dialoguer avec John Reichenbach, l’auteur de ‘’Comprendre les Irlandais’’ paru chez Riveneuve. Cet ancien journaliste de Radio France, Arte, Europe 1 et France Télévisions, lui même Irlandais par sa mère, y raconte tout ce qui fait l’âme de ce peuple insulaire.

If there’s one name inextricably linked with Ireland, it’s Patrick. Saint Patrick of Ireland lived in the early 5th century, and is credited with evangelising the island and founding Irish Christianity. The whole of Ireland, as well as the 80 to 100 million people with Irish heritage around the world, pay tribute to him on Saint Patrick’s Day every March 17.
The 28th British & Irish Screens festival is delighted to dedicate the programme of Monday, March 17 to this culture so diverse and so deeply rooted in the minds of an entire people. The richness of its traditions, music in all its forms, songs, literature and cinema are now shared and appreciated throughout the world.
We therefore invite you to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with a 100% Irish evening, featuring live Irish music plus the screening of a remarkable documentary, Steps of Freedom – The Story of Irish Dance, which tells the story of the Irish jig through the ages. Produced by BBC 4 and broadcast on Arte in 2023, the film has won several awards.
Finally, you’ll have the opportunity to meet John Reichenbach, the author of Comprendre les Irlandais (Understanding the Irish), published by Riveneuve. With an Irish mother and a French father, this former journalist for Radio France, Arte, Europe 1 and France Télévisions, reveals the fascinating soul of this island people.
