La 28ème édition du festival Ecrans britanniques & irlandais rend hommage cette année à une grande dame du cinéma, du théâtre et de la télévision britanniques, décédée au mois de septembre dernier à près de 90 ans.
Parmi son immense et très riche filmographie, nous vous proposons six films qui reflètent parfaitement l’immense talent de Maggie Smith, de The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Les belles années de Miss Brodie) de 1969 qui lui avait valu l’Oscar de la meilleure actrice à The Lady in the Van de 2015 grâce auquel elle obtint un Golden Globe et un BAFTA.
Vous pourrez aussi voir ou revoir A Room with a View (Chambre avec vue), A Private Function (Porc Royal), Ladies in Lavender (Les Dames de Cornouailles) et Indian Palace (Bienvenue au Marigold Hotel).
Plusieurs générations se souviennent des personnages émouvants, généreux ou drôles qu’elle a incarnés. Et personne ne peut oublier ses prestations dans la saga Harry Potter dont elle est indissociable et dont elle a incarné le professeur Minerva McGonagall de 2001 à 2011.
L’un de ses fils, acteur lui aussi, Chris Larkin, nous fait le grand honneur d’être présent à Nîmes. Nous le remercions vivement d’avoir accepté notre invitation. Son biographe, le journaliste britannique et critique de cinéma Michael Coveney, nous apportera également son témoignage depuis le Royaume Uni.

THE UNFORGETTABLE DAME MAGGIE SMITH
The 28th British & Irish Screens festival pays tribute this year to Dame Maggie Smith, the grande dame of British cinema, theatre and television, who passed away last September at the age of almost 90.
We are featuring six films from her huge and very rich filmography which perfectly reflect her immense talent, from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), which earned her the Oscar for Best Actress, to The Lady in the Van (2015), for which she won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA.
You can also see or re-watch A Room with a View, A Private Function, Ladies in Lavender and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Several generations remember the moving, generous or funny characters she played – and of course who can forget her performances in the Harry Potter saga, with which she is inextricably linked and in which she played Professor Minerva McGonagall from 2001 to 2011.
We are deeply honoured that actor Chris Larkin, one of Dame Maggie’s two sons, has very kindly accepted our invitation to join us to introduce some of his mother’s films. Meanwhile, her biographer, British journalist and film critic Michael Coveney, will also be talking to us about her work from the UK.
