Le 28ème festival Ecrans britanniques & irlandais rend hommage cette année à Marianne Faithfull, décédée au mois de janvier, à l’âge de 78 ans. En 55 ans de carrière, elle a signé une vingtaine d’albums et joué dans plus de 20 films, sans compter téléfilms et séries télévisées. Elle a tourné avec Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Winner, Laszlo Benedek, Paul Anderson ou Sofia Coppola. Nous vous recommandons tout particulièrement les deux longs métrages à l’affiche du festival.
The Girl on a Motorcycle (La Motocyclette) de Jack Cardiff, avec Alain Delon, avait été sélectionné à Cannes en 1968, année où aucune récompense n’avait été décernée en raison de l’annulation du Festival. Elle y campe une jeune mariée qui décide de quitter sa morne vie conjugale pour rejoindre son amant.
Dans Irina Palm de Sam Garbarski, sorti en 2007, elle interprète le rôle principal, celui d’une grand-mère prête à tout pour sauver son petit fils mourant. Dix ans plus tard, Sandrine Bonnaire lui consacrera un long métrage, Marianne Faithful, Fleur d’âme, dans lequel elle jouera son propre rôle.

The 28th British Irish Screens festival pays tribute this year to Ms Faithfull, who died in January at the age of 78. In a career spanning 55 years, she released some 20 albums and appeared in more than 20 films, plus TV movies and series, working with Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Winner, Laszlo Benedek, Paul Anderson and Sofia Coppola among others.
The festival’s tribute to Marianne Faithfull features two of her films. In Jack Cardiff’s The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968), starring Alain Delon, she played a young bride who decides to leave
her dreary married life to join her lover. This film was selected at Cannes in 1968, but no awards were given as the Festival was cancelled due to the political turmoil of May 1968.
